Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Political education plays a crucial role in shaping voter behavior, especially in rural areas where access to political information may be limited. In Shendam LGA, Plateau State, civic engagement programs have been implemented to raise awareness about the electoral process and the importance of voting. These programs aim to educate citizens on their political rights and responsibilities, fostering a more informed electorate. The impact of such programs on voter behavior, however, remains under-explored. Political education can influence voting patterns, political attitudes, and ultimately, election outcomes (Jibril & Aliyu, 2024). This study will explore how civic engagement programs in Shendam LGA have affected voter behavior, particularly in terms of voter turnout, party loyalty, and candidate selection.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the efforts to improve political education in Shendam LGA through civic engagement programs, there remains a gap in understanding how these programs influence actual voter behavior. In particular, it is unclear whether these educational initiatives lead to increased voter turnout, more informed voting choices, or changes in political attitudes. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining the direct impact of political education on voter behavior in Shendam LGA.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypotheses
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the understanding of how political education programs can enhance voter behavior and strengthen democratic processes. By examining the case of Shendam LGA, the study will provide insights that can inform the design and implementation of more effective civic education programs across Nigeria, ultimately promoting greater political participation and more informed electoral choices.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the effects of civic engagement programs on voter behavior in Shendam LGA, Plateau State, during local elections. It will not extend to other forms of political engagement beyond voting. Limitations include difficulties in measuring the direct impact of political education on voter behavior and potential biases in self-reported data.
